The average price of petrol in Spain has reached its peak of 2026 at 1.835 euros per litre, according to the latest data from the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (Miteco). This increase is directly felt in drivers' pockets: filling a 55-litre tank costs an average of 100.9 euros, 5.64 euros more than just eight days ago.
As reported by somosclm.com, the increase coincides with the reduction, since 1 September, of the discount applied to petrol, which has dropped from 10 to 5 cents per litre. Since Monday, the last day with the previous reduction, prices at service stations have risen by 5.9%, and the difference is even greater compared to a month ago, with an increase of 8.5%.
Petrol is now 24% more expensive than on 28 February, when the military escalation in the Middle East began. To mitigate the rising energy costs, the Government had reduced VAT on hydrocarbons from 21% to 10% and lowered the hydrocarbon tax to the minimum allowed by the EU.
Diesel, for its part, is also rising again. Since 1 September, its discount has doubled, increasing from 10 to 20 cents per litre. This measure initially caused a drop from 1.852 euros per litre on 31 August to 1.773 euros the following day, but since then the fuel has progressively become more expensive. This Tuesday, it stood at 1.809 euros per litre, 2% more than a week ago, although it is still 2.3% cheaper than at the end of August. Filling a 55-litre diesel tank costs around 99.5 euros.
Prices vary significantly depending on the service station. Across Spain, petrol prices range from 1.4 euros per litre at a station in Torà (Lleida) to 2.299 euros at another in Mahón (Balearic Islands). In the case of diesel, the highest price reported this Wednesday by the National Commission of Markets and Competition (CNMC) reaches 2.249 euros per litre in Lepe (Huelva), while the cheapest is found in Fuente-Álamo (Albacete), at 1.499 euros.
