The Prime Minister inaugurates a high-level dialogue in New York alongside Macron, Albanese, and Ruto. Spain is pushing to set the minimum age for social media access at 16.
The Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, has defended the need to regulate the digital environment to protect minors during his speech at the High-Level Dialogue on Artificial Intelligence held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. The meeting, driven by Spain, France, Australia, and Kenya, as reported by the La Moncloa website, has brought together international leaders to address the risks of AI to children.
Sánchez opened the meeting alongside the President of France, Emmanuel Macron; the Prime Minister of Australia, Anthony Albanese; and the President of Kenya, William Ruto. In his speech, he warned that artificial intelligence poses "enormous risks" despite the hopes it raises, for example, in curing diseases.

The President pointed out that "some techno-oligarchs concentrate power and wealth, shaping values and preferences" and stated that this technology "exacerbates problems such as cyberbullying, hate, sexual crimes, or loneliness." He also noted that warnings about these dangers come from those developing the most advanced AI models.
"Companies must be held accountable for the impact of their activities on minors. They cannot privatize profits and socialise costs"
On the regulatory front, Sánchez highlighted Spain's push for a law to set the minimum age for social media access at 16 years, as well as the development of the first effective age verification system based on the European Digital Identity Wallet.
