Consumer credit in Spain continues to rise, achieving a year-on-year growth of 12.6% in July, according to data from the Bank of Spain. This growth persists despite the rising cost of money and economic uncertainty.
Consumer credit in Spain maintains its upward trend, experiencing a year-on-year growth of 12.6% in July, as reported by the Bank of Spain. This increase contrasts with the more modest growth of credit to households in general, which stood at 5.2%, and that of loans for home purchases, which was 4.3%.
Despite the slowdown compared to June, when growth reached 12.8%, consumer credit has maintained growth above 12% for nine consecutive months since November last year. Since April 2024, the balance of these loans has exceeded €100 billion.
In 2025, new investment in consumer credit also showed an increase, rising by 4.5% to reach €27.681 billion. This growth occurred despite the geopolitical uncertainty that affected consumer confidence, according to the Spanish Association of Financial Credit Establishments (ASNEF).
The Loan Barometer from the Association of Financial Users (Asufin), published in July, shows that 35.9% of respondents intend to apply for a loan in the next six months. Of these applications, 17% are aimed at financing travel and holidays, while 20.1% seek immediate liquidity or debt refinancing.
The General Director of Préstalo, Yogi Thadhani, points out that the increase in credit applications is due more to greater consumer confidence than to urgent need, as households are returning to plan large expenses that they had postponed in recent years.
