Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has confirmed that it plans to lay off 4,000 people in the UK within two years. This decision, communicated this morning, is part of a plan to achieve savings of £1.7 billion (approximately €1.98 billion), and the layoffs are expected to be voluntary, minimising the impact on production plants. The information, reported by expansion.com, details that the company is seeking to adjust to a challenging environment for the automotive sector.
Among the factors that have led JLR to this decision are the strong competition from Chinese vehicles and the recent imposition of a 10% tariff on imported cars in the United States, a critical market that accounts for 29% of the company's sales. Additionally, the impact of a cyberattack suffered last October, considered one of the most costly in UK history, has also influenced this restructuring.
The British Minister for Business, Jonathan Reynolds, has stated that the government has no plans to rescue JLR, which is the country's main car manufacturer and employs around 30,000 people in the UK, spread across four factories. Despite the layoffs, JLR's CEO, P. B. Balaji, has stated that the company will launch five new products in the coming year and will renew its strategy in the United States to seek growth exceeding 10%.
