New York's mayor, Zohran Mamdani, has decided to prohibit the use of artificial intelligence in primary education classrooms during the 2026-2027 school year. This measure affects approximately 600,000 students in the city.
The use of artificial intelligence (AI) in New York's primary education classrooms will be banned during the 2026-2027 school year, according to expansion.com. This decision by Mayor Zohran Mamdani aims to ensure a human and safe learning environment for children.
The moratorium applies to around 600,000 students, covering from preschool to eighth grade, which in Spain corresponds to children aged 2 to 14 years. The mayor justified this decision by stating that “children need teachers and human contact to learn and grow.”
During this period, educational authorities will analyse the impact of AI on learning, while secondary school students will receive classes on AI literacy, designed to develop critical thinking regarding this technology.
Additionally, five pilot programmes will be implemented allowing controlled use of AI tools for 5% of the student body, that is, about 50,000 students. Exceptions are also anticipated for students with disabilities who may benefit from AI.
On the other hand, limitations have been established on screen use for children under 9 years and usage limits of between 30 and 45 minutes are advised for students aged 10 to 14 years. The measure has generated mixed opinions among parents and experts regarding the relevance of AI in future education.
