The European Union is preparing a new European Integrated Climate Resilience Framework, which is expected to be presented this autumn. The importance of this plan arises in light of the increase in climate disasters such as wildfires and floods, which has led to prioritising adaptation as a key strategy to mitigate their impacts.
According to expansion.com, Spain, through the Ministry for Ecological Transition, has been actively involved in the discussions surrounding the creation of this framework. In a document addressed to the European Climate Commissioner, Wopke Hoekstra, the implementation of a EU-level tax on oil and gas has been proposed to fund necessary actions against climate change.
In addition to the tax, the document also suggests funding alternatives such as introducing levies on luxury air travel. This initiative aims to complement the European Climate Adaptation Plan (PAEC), which was announced by President Ursula von der Leyen two years ago and aims to help member states improve their climate resilience.
Spain has the National Climate Change Adaptation Plan (PNACC) 2021-2030, designed to build a more resilient and secure country against climate risks. This plan focuses on vital sectors of the economy such as agriculture, forestry, tourism, and transport, which are particularly vulnerable to climate variations.
