The European Commission has stated it is not surprised by reports of a potential threat from Russian drones that could attack Spain, France, or Italy. Spokesperson Thomas Regnier highlighted that the community airspace has been violated several times.
The European Commission (EC) declared this Thursday that it is not surprised by reports of the possibility of Russian drone attacks on European territory, specifically in Spain, France, and Italy. According to the newspaper 'El Mundo', the CIA alerted EU governments about this situation, mentioning the drones' ability to operate from ships 600 kilometres away.
Community spokesperson Thomas Regnier indicated at the press conference that the EC is not aware of any specific alert regarding these attacks, although it is aware that the community airspace has been violated several times. “We have seen the reports and we are not surprised at all,” he added.
Regnier explained that the EC is aware of hybrid attacks being carried out against several member states and that, to address these threats, the Commission has proposed initiatives such as drone defence and an air shield. “We know our airspace is being tested,” he stated.
Despite the alert, the spokesperson made it clear that any action in this regard falls to national authorities, although the EU has a history of supporting its members in crisis situations.
In another related incident, this morning, two Spanish F18 fighter jets were dispatched from Mihail Kogalniceanu Base in Romania to monitor aerial targets near the border with Ukraine. A drone briefly entered Romanian airspace before crashing without causing damage.
