The President of the United States, Donald Trump, has defended the expansion of data centres, considering them fundamental for the prosperity of communities. Donald Trump expressed his support for the expansion of data centres in the United States on Monday, describing them as "the goose that lays the golden eggs" for generating wealth in communities. In a message on the social network Truth Social, the president emphasised that opposition to these centres will only lead the country to poverty and stagnation.
Trump highlighted that there are approximately 4,000 data centres in the country and that 75 new projects have been affected by local moratoriums in the first quarter of 2026. He also warned that more than 70% of Americans oppose the construction of these facilities due to concerns about environmental impact and rising utility bills.
The five major tech giants, such as Amazon, Microsoft, Google, Meta, and Oracle, plan to invest over $750 billion in this sector during 2026, representing a significant increase in investment in data centres. These facilities are critical for the functioning of cloud services and artificial intelligence infrastructure.
Opposition to the construction of data centres has grown in both political parties, despite support from the White House. Democratic and Republican lawmakers have begun to call for restrictions to curb their expansion, a topic that is becoming relevant as elections approach to renew the House of Representatives and one-third of the Senate in the United States.
