Iberdrola and Naturgy have formed an alliance to develop hydroelectric projects under the company A Senra Infraestructuras. This initiative aims to harness water resources in Parada de Sil, Ourense.
Iberdrola, Spain's leading electricity company, and Naturgy, the third largest, have established an unprecedented alliance in the hydroelectric sector. Both companies have created the joint venture A Senra Infraestructuras to develop new projects in this area, according to expansion.com.
The company began its journey months ago, but is now formally requesting a concession from the Confederación Hidrográfica del Miño-Sil (CHMS) to utilise up to 75,000 litres per second from the Sil and Edrada rivers, in the Ourense municipality of Parada de Sil, for a hydraulic energy storage plant.
The request was published in the Boletín Oficial del Estado (BOE), initiating a public information period during which other companies can submit alternative proposals over the next month.
It is important to highlight that this publication does not imply project approval or the definitive concession of the utilisation, but marks the beginning of an administrative procedure to determine which project will be awarded the requested use. Sources in the sector have indicated that, for the moment, no investment decision has been made regarding this initiative.
This collaboration represents a challenge for other companies in the sector, especially for Endesa and Red Eléctrica (REE), which are also looking to establish pumping stations, as well as for Repsol with its Aguayo project in Cantabria.
