Uber has received authorization to operate autonomous cars in Madrid. The first tests will begin with a driver on board, and commercial service is expected to start by the end of this year.
In the coming weeks, Madrid will see the arrival of autonomous cars on its streets, although they will initially have a driver on board. The Directorate General of Traffic (DGT) has granted Uber, WeRide, and AVOMO the first national authorization in Spain for Level 4 autonomous passenger vehicles.
This level allows the vehicle to perform all driving tasks autonomously, although only in specific areas or conditions. The initial deployment phase will include twenty vehicles from WeRide, which will operate under the supervision of a specialist and will travel through high-demand areas in the Community of Madrid.
Uber plans to begin commercial service by the end of this year, although initially with a driver for safety and regulatory reasons. According to their estimates, starting in 2027, the cars will be able to operate without an operator on board. This service is part of a broader context in Europe, where several companies, such as Bolt and Cabify, are also developing similar initiatives.
