The mayor of Alhaurín de la Torre, Joaquín Villanova, has announced the upcoming opening of a Consum supermarket in the premises on San Juan street that was occupied by Mercadona until its closure in July 2025. The establishment will begin operations when the renovation and adaptation works of the building are completed.
The announcement came after a working meeting between the mayor and Vitorio Cheli, expansion technician of the chain, to finalize the implementation of the cooperative in the municipality. The building is located next to the Municipal Market, in an area with numerous businesses from various sectors.
Villanova has pointed out that the reopening will bring back a focus of activity and public influx to the centre. The previous supermarket recorded more than 3,000 daily visitors, according to data provided by the Town Hall.

The mayor emphasized the positive impact on shops, bars, and businesses in the area, as well as the proximity service for local residents, especially the elderly and those without their own vehicle.
Consum is the largest food distribution cooperative in Spain, of Valencian origin, and maintains an expansion plan throughout Andalusia. In the province of Málaga, it has strengthened its presence with the acquisition of a logistics space for its operations.
The opening will be determined by the pace of the renovation works on the premises, with no specific date at the moment.
