The Atalaya Foundation has allocated over 812,000 euros in the last financial year to social, educational, cultural, sports, and environmental initiatives in the Mining Basin. This amount doubles the number of beneficiary entities compared to five years ago.
The Atalaya Foundation, which channels the social responsibility of the mine operated by Atalaya Mining in Minas de Riotinto, has invested over 812,000 euros during the last financial year in social, educational, cultural, sports, and environmental projects in the region. According to the entity, this funding has benefited more than double the number of entities compared to five years ago, as reported by Huelva Información.
The majority of the budget has been allocated to agreements signed with the municipalities of Minas de Riotinto, Nerva, El Campillo, Campofrío, Zalamea la Real, Berrocal, and La Granada de Riotinto. These agreements finance projects proposed by the municipalities themselves, such as the improvement of urban furniture, public spaces, educational centres, and sports facilities, as well as the acquisition of vehicles and other equipment to optimise municipal services.
The foundation has also supported initiatives from associations and groups in the region linked to social, cultural, and heritage areas. Notable collaborations include those with AFA El Campillo, Asociación Athenea, Aspromin, Unidos por El Alto, and the Conservatorio Manuel Rojas.
Sports has been another focus of action, with support for clubs such as Riotinto Balompié, Nerva Football Club, Runners Cuenca Minera, Nerva Billiards Club, and the Club de Golf Corta Atalaya. This is complemented by charitable events such as La Mina Bike and the San Silvestre Riotinteña, as well as improvements to municipal facilities, including the futsal courts of Los Cantos, the Municipal Stadium 'Cradle of Spanish Football', and the calisthenics circuit of La Dehesa.
In parallel, the foundation develops its own programs. The most notable is the fifth edition of the Mining Facilities Operator Course, a free training for 20 unemployed people from the region that responds to the demand for qualified profiles in the sector. It also promotes Mine Crush, to encourage interest in mining among young people, and Riotinto Experience, a 4x4 bus tour that allows visitors to learn about mining operations from within and expands the tourist offer of the Mining Basin.
The vice president of the foundation, Enrique Delgado, has stated that the entity remains committed to the region:
"We will continue to work with the same dedication to consolidate a model of sustainable, diversified development capable of attracting talent and new opportunities".
