Unemployment fell by 409 people in the province, down to 97,095 unemployed, in a month when unemployment rose in the rest of Andalusia and across Spain.
The province of Málaga was the only one in Andalusia where unemployment decreased in August, according to data published this Wednesday by the Ministry of Labour and Social Economy reported by Diario Sur. Unemployment fell by 409 people, a 0.42%, bringing the total to 97,095.
This decrease makes Málaga one of only three territories in the country where unemployment fell, alongside Ceuta (148 fewer unemployed) and Las Palmas (94 fewer). In the rest of the Spanish provinces, unemployment rose, with the largest increases in Barcelona (10,743), Madrid (6,881), and Valencia (3,080).
Across Andalusia, unemployment increased by 3,394 people (0.64%), reaching 530,256. The province with the largest absolute increase was Sevilla (1,457 more unemployed), while in percentage terms, the highest increase was in Jaén (1.30%). In Spain, August saw an increase of 44,419 unemployed, a 1.92%, bringing the total to 2.355 million.
The year-on-year comparison is favourable for Málaga: there are 11,634 fewer unemployed than a year ago, a reduction of 10.70%, compared to a 2.91% decrease recorded across the country. By sector, unemployment only rose in construction, with 177 more unemployed, bringing the total to 9,871. The services sector continues to have the highest number of unemployed (70,568), followed by industry (4,186) and agriculture (2,050).
Affiliation to Social Security barely showed the end of summer: the province lost 294 contributors in August, a 0.03%, down to 789,701. In year-on-year terms, Málaga has gained 32,457 contributors, a 4.29%, above the average growth in Andalusia (3.21%) and only surpassed by Almería in relative comparison (4.54%).
During August, 42,047 contracts were signed in Málaga, a 31.63% decrease from July but a 4.05% increase compared to the same month in 2025. Of these, 18,821 were permanent (a 7.29% year-on-year increase) and 23,236 were temporary (a 1.56% increase). So far this year, 401,329 contracts have been registered, of which 46.34% are permanent.
