The former CEO of Formula 1, Bernie Ecclestone, was arrested at an airport in Portugal for carrying a shotgun without a permit. This incident adds to his history of legal troubles regarding firearms.
The former chief executive of Formula 1, Bernie Ecclestone, was arrested last Monday at Tires Airport, near Lisbon, after being found in possession of a shotgun for which he did not have the necessary permit. The information, reported by expansion.com, indicates that Ecclestone was released hours later.
According to Ecclestone himself, speaking to the Daily Mail, he transported the weapon from Switzerland intending to hunt pigeons. When questioned by the agents of the Portuguese Public Security Police, the British businessman admitted that he did not have the required documentation, known as the blue book. “I never travel with documents of that kind,” he stated.
This is not the first firearms-related incident Ecclestone has faced. In May 2022, he was arrested at Viracopos Airport in Brazil after a .32 calibre pistol was found in his possession. On that occasion, he also had to pay a fine before being able to continue his journey.
Ecclestone, 95, was a key figure in the development of Formula 1 for four decades, leading the category from 1987 until 2017, when Liberty Media acquired its rights.
