The president of the Navarra Chamber of Commerce, Javier Taberna, met this Wednesday with the representative of the Regional Government of Kurdistan in Spain, Darawan Haji Hamed, to discuss business opportunities in the region.
The president of the Navarra Chamber of Commerce, Javier Taberna, received this Wednesday the representative of the Regional Government of Kurdistan – Iraq in Spain, Darawan Haji Hamed, in a meeting where both parties analysed the possibilities for business collaboration between Navarra and the Kurdish region, as reported by camaranavarra.com.
The Iraqi Kurdistan region has more than 6.5 million inhabitants and has been recognised since 2005 as an autonomous federal entity within Iraq. This population is joined by between 30 and 40 million Kurds spread across Turkey, Iraq, Syria, and Iran.
The Kurdish representative has set as main lines of action the strengthening of institutional, economic, and cultural relations between Kurdistan and Spain. Among his objectives is the creation of a Consulate General of Kurdistan in Erbil, following the model of more than thirty countries that already have diplomatic representation in the region.
Haji Hamed has also proposed increasing foreign investments by taking advantage of the tax benefits offered by his government, promoting the use of Spanish, encouraging twinning between cities, and enhancing economic relations with Spanish autonomous communities.
The region already maintains commercial and institutional ties with other communities, such as Murcia and Castilla y León, where this year economic business forums have been held.
The Navarra Chamber of Commerce will work to bring these opportunities to the companies of the Foral Community, with special attention to sectors such as agroindustry, agricultural machinery, and energy.
