A group of hackers, calling themselves 'iamnotavillain', is demanding three million dollars from Revolut to avoid selling confidential data of its customers. The threat was made public through their website, where a countdown clock was also included.
Revolut is under threat from a group that calls itself iamnotavillain, which is demanding a ransom of three million dollars in Monero cryptocurrencies to avoid leaking the data of hundreds of its customers. The information, reported by Financial Times, indicates that the hackers published their ultimatum on their website on Wednesday, alongside a digital clock counting down the time remaining for payment.
The group has indicated that if Revolut does not comply with their demand, they will proceed to sell the confidential information to other criminals. This type of threat is unusual, as hackers typically keep these negotiations private. The demand specifies a payment of 6000 XMR, warning that if not paid, “they will have blood on their hands.”
It is estimated that the leak could affect up to 680 accounts of customers, and the hackers may have obtained the information by compromising a government email system in Italy. Using this access, they reportedly requested specific account data from Revolut over several months.
The documents that may have been obtained include personal data such as driving licenses and passports, as well as transaction histories. For its part, Revolut has stated that it has not received direct contact from the attackers and is providing “immediate support” to affected customers, in addition to cooperating with the relevant authorities.
Since its founding in 2015, Revolut has become one of the leading fintech companies in Europe, with a recent valuation of 115 billion dollars and operating in more than 30 countries.
