Unicaja has received double the applications for its early retirement programme, which includes 100 places. The conditions allow for 73% of the annual gross salary until the age of 63.

The early retirement programme launched by Unicaja at the beginning of 2026 has generated high demand among its employees over 57 years old. According to expansion.com, the Málaga-based bank has received double the applications than the available places, as only 100 incentivised departures are being offered.

The conditions of the programme include 73% of the fixed annual gross salary for beneficiaries, and Unicaja will also cover social contributions until the employee reaches 63, thus ensuring they continue to accumulate rights for their future retirement. This programme does not represent any cost to the State.

So far, some applications have already been rejected for exceeding the quota, and the entity has reserved 27 million euros to manage these early departures, which implies an average of 270,000 euros per employee. In comparison, the incentivised departure programme of Sabadell has a limit of 300,000 euros per year per worker.

The CEO of Unicaja, Isidro Rubiales, has stated that the objective of this programme is not to reduce costs, but to incorporate new specialised talent. The entity anticipates the incorporation of up to 350 professionals in key areas within its strategic plan that will conclude in 2027.

The banking sector in Spain has seen a 40% reduction in its workforce since 2008, equivalent to 110,000 employees. This has led banks to seek alternatives to attract experts in technology and risk management, in a context where competition is intensifying with large tech companies.
