The Onuba project is already underway. The first phase of the Andalusian Green Hydrogen Valley promoted by Moeve will be developed on the company's land next to the La Rábida Energy Park in Palos de la Frontera, featuring a renewable hydrogen plant with 300 megawatts and over €1 billion in accumulated investment, as reported by elmira.es.
Business forecasts estimate the project's impact at over 8,000 direct and indirect jobs across its entire value chain, and predict it will act as a driving force for more than 400 SMEs and self-employed workers. The facility is expected to be operational by 2029.
The launch event was attended by the president of the Junta de Andalucía, Juanma Moreno, who took the opportunity to call for sufficient electrical infrastructure for the community.
“We have great possibilities, great potential, but we need, and it is essential, to maximise that reindustrialising advance of our land under the umbrella of this energy transition”
Moreno has stated that Andalusia ranks first nationally in renewable electricity generation capacity and warned that the planned grid could affect the viability of 119 identified industrial, residential, energy, hydrogen, and data centre projects.
This demand comes amid ongoing debate about the national electricity planning towards 2030. The central government has announced an investment of over €17 billion to strengthen Spanish networks, 30% more than initially proposed, while the Junta maintains that the final planning must address Andalusian needs.
Moeve plans to develop a total electrolysis capacity of 2 gigawatts in Andalusia, distributed between the La Rábida and San Roque (Cádiz) energy parks, aiming to produce up to 300,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually. The Andalusian president has expressed hope that, following Huelva, the second planned site in the Cádiz province will also progress.
