Bitcoin has surpassed the $80,000 barrier, reaching $80,943, thanks to a new debt purchase plan from the United States Treasury. This 4.89% increase marks its highest level since May.
The cryptocurrency bitcoin has reached a value of $80,943, once again surpassing the psychological barrier of $80,000. This rise of 4.89% comes after the announcement from the U.S. Treasury of a debt purchase plan, which has revitalised interest in the digital asset. This is the highest level it has reached since May of this year.
Despite this recent advance, bitcoin has experienced a decline of 7.6% so far in 2026 and a drop of 29.6% from its all-time high of $126,000 reached in October 2025. However, the Treasury's new measures, which include doubling long-term bond buybacks, have reactivated liquidity in the market, benefiting cryptocurrencies.
According to Simon Peters, a crypto asset analyst at eToro, these measures have revitalised interest in bitcoin, which historically benefits from increased liquidity. Furthermore, although inflation in the U.S. remains above the 2% target, any signs of cooling could further boost its value.
Peters also notes that the last months of the year are typically favourable for bitcoin, which could influence its performance in the fourth quarter of 2026.
