The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, has indicated that Morocco is responsible for the migration crisis in Ceuta. During his speech at the UN, he requested answers from the neighbouring country regarding the collapse in border control.
The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, has for the first time pointed to Morocco as responsible for the migration crisis that affected Ceuta on July 30, when around 80,000 people entered illegally in a short period. These statements were made during his participation in the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York, according to expansion.com.
Sánchez stated that he has asked for "answers" from Morocco, emphasising that "it is evident that their border control has failed." In his speech, he also highlighted that the autonomous cities of Ceuta and Melilla represent not only the southern border of Spain but also that of the European Union.
The Spanish president lamented the lack of support from other countries during the crisis and recalled that 10,000 migrants still remain in Ceuta following the influx. Despite his criticism of Morocco, he insisted on the need to respect the "human dignity" of the affected migrants.
On previous occasions, Sánchez had avoided directly pointing to Morocco, promising to act with "firmness" if evidence of the Moroccan government's involvement was found. However, this time, his tone has changed, reinforcing the urgency of the situation.
