Cofides has officially entered Elian with an investment of 40 million euros, acquiring 13.8% of the capital. This collaboration aims to finance the expansion of the plant in the Port of Barcelona.
The state-owned Cofides has confirmed its participation in the company Elian through an investment of 40 million euros, which grants it 13.8% of the capital. According to expansion.com, Elian is the company that acquired the soybean grinding plant of the multinational Cargill, located in the Port of Barcelona, in 2024.
With this operation, Cofides aims to contribute to the financing of Elian's facility expansion, estimated at 300 million euros. The goal is to increase the plant's area to 90,000 square meters and raise the production capacity of plant protein to 870,000 tons, a 13% increase compared to the current capacity, with completion expected by the end of 2028.
Elian, which currently has a workforce of 90 employees, reported a turnover of 400 million euros last year. Its director, Andrés Martín, highlighted that Cofides' entry represents significant institutional support and that this alliance will allow them to accelerate their project to lead plant protein sovereignty in Europe.
The operation also includes a seat for Cofides on Elian's board of directors, alongside Martín and the CEO of Viserion, Aaron Wiegan. Miguel Tiana, director of Cofides, emphasized the importance of this innovative industrial project to strengthen European supply chains.
The event also featured the participation of the conseller of Empresa i Treball, Miquel Sámper, who recalled the Govern's support for Elian's plans, including a grant of 2.25 million euros awarded by the Acció agency last year.
In addition to the investment in Elian, Viserion has cultivated 1,000 hectares of soybeans in Lleida and plans to triple this area by incorporating farms in Aragón.
