Iranian authorities are easing currency controls to promote the use of cryptocurrencies in commercial transactions. This measure aims to repatriate foreign funds and alleviate economic pressure from sanctions.

Iran has begun using cryptocurrencies to maintain trade flow during the war and US blockade, according to expansion.com. Authorities have relaxed currency controls to allow traders to repatriate funds necessary for the economy.

For years, Iran has imposed significant obstacles on importers and exporters, leading companies to accumulate over 100 billion dollars in undeclared profits, according to judicial estimates. In response, the central bank has encouraged traders to use cryptocurrencies, primarily Tether and bitcoin, to settle cross-border transactions.

Under this new system, traders can exchange currencies on the open market, avoiding official exchange rates. An executive close to the regime states that "receiving cryptocurrencies for exports is now a fully established practice." US sanctions have forced Iran to seek alternatives for international transactions.

In 2025, nearly 10 billion dollars in cryptocurrencies were moved through Iran, reflecting a growing adoption of these technologies in a country excluded from global payment systems. Experts indicate that this trend is a response to current geopolitical realities.
