The US Secretary of Transportation has expressed concerns about Ford's alliance with Geely, which affects its factory in Almussafes. The criticism focuses on national security and the impact on American workers.
The US Secretary of Transportation, Sean P. Duffy, has voiced his disapproval of the strategic alliance that Ford signed in July with the Chinese automaker Geely to jointly operate its plant in Almussafes, Valencia. According to reports, Duffy has highlighted national security concerns and argued that this decision harms American workers.
In a letter addressed to Ford's CEO, Jim Farley, the Secretary warned about the risks of adopting Chinese technology and manufacturing, which could negatively affect local skilled workers. Duffy stated that the company should prioritise production in the United States.
The statement from the Department of Transportation also mentions that Ford has increased its reliance on Chinese companies, which could compromise its status as a reliable partner. Duffy emphasises that American companies, including iconic ones like Ford, must strive for technological self-sufficiency to remain competitive.
Furthermore, the Secretary pointed out that Ford has used licensed technology from Contemporary Amperex Technology (CATL), a Chinese battery manufacturer that is on the Department of Defence's prohibited companies list. This, along with the decision to delay the production of some Lincoln models until 2030, increases Ford's dependence on China in the coming years.
