Christine Lagarde, president of the European Central Bank, has left open the possibility of leaving her position before her term ends in October 2027. In an interview, she stated that her future is uncertain with a 'we'll see'.
Christine Lagarde, president of the European Central Bank (ECB), has hinted at the possibility of leaving her post before her term concludes in October 2027. In an interview with Irish public broadcaster RTE, Lagarde responded with a 'we'll see' when asked about a potential early exit.
During the conversation, Lagarde stated:
"I will leave in 2027"when referring to her eventual departure. However, she was less definitive when addressing the exact date, suggesting that the timing will be managed professionally.
At the press conference following the Eurogroup meeting, Lagarde indicated that she has not discussed this matter with the finance ministers of the eurozone, who have also not raised questions about it. The possibility of her replacement has gained relevance, as it has been reported that France could support Klaas Knot to succeed her, provided that a French candidate occupies the position of chief economist at the ECB.
