The Council of Ministers has appointed Leire Iglesias as the new Secretary of State for Housing and Urban Agenda, a position she takes on following the death of David Lucas. Iglesias arrives at a crucial moment, with negotiations for a new housing decree underway.
Leire Iglesias has been named Secretary of State for Housing and Urban Agenda by the Council of Ministers, replacing David Lucas, who passed away on 20 July. The information, reported by the publication expansion.com, highlights that Iglesias was the president of the Casa 47 organisation, a state entity dedicated to managing the entire housing cycle.
Iglesias has been involved in the creation and launch of Casa 47, which emerged from the transformation of SEPES. This organisation aims to guarantee the right to access housing, from planning to handing over the keys. Prior to her appointment, Iglesias was the councillor for Mobility, Transport and Housing of the Junta de Extremadura, where she approved the Housing Plan 2022-2027 and various legislative modifications related to access to housing.
The appointment of Iglesias comes in the context of negotiations for a new housing decree, which seeks the approval of key measures, such as extending rental contracts until 2028 and tax measures for landlords who keep rental prices stable. However, the lack of consensus with some parliamentary partners has delayed the approval of this text.
In Iglesias's position at the helm of Casa 47, the Government has appointed Maribel Ramos as president of the entity, who previously held the direction of the affordable housing park.
