The President of the Government emphasises that the Andalusian Green Hydrogen Valley begins construction with €1 billion investment and €300 million public support.
The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, has described green hydrogen as a "national project" during the closing of the event marking the start of construction of the Andalusian Green Hydrogen Valley, promoted by Moeve in Palos de la Frontera (Huelva). According to La Moncloa, Sánchez stated that this initiative represents "part of the solution to the climate emergency" and embodies "the future of Huelva and Andalucía, and the industrial and energy future of Spain."
The project starts with an investment of €1 billion in its first phase and has received €300 million in public support. The plant will have an initial capacity of 300 megawatts (MW), expandable to 405 MW, and will be able to produce around 50,000 tonnes of renewable hydrogen per year. Overall, the Andalusian Valley could reach 2,000 MW, with a total investment of €3 billion and a production of 300,000 tonnes of green hydrogen.
The event was also attended by the third vice president and minister for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, Sara Aagesen; the president of the Junta de Andalucía, Juan Manuel Moreno Bonilla, and the government delegate in Andalucía, Pedro Fernández.
Sánchez linked the project to emission reductions and job creation. He stated it would mean "about 250,000 tonnes less CO₂ each year in the atmosphere, over 3,700 direct jobs during execution, and more than 400 small and medium-sized enterprises participating."
"For decades, Spain and Europe have depended too much on energy coming from elsewhere. We still do. Unfortunately, every international crisis reminds us of the enormous price we are paying for that dependency," the president indicated.
The head of the Executive defended that producing more energy in Spain is a matter of climate as well as autonomy and security. "We cannot leave our supply at the mercy of unjustified wars, external tensions, or the legitimate geopolitical interests of other powers that are not ours," he added.
In this context, he urged to "seize a huge industrial opportunity" and assured that "Spain wants to be among the countries leading this ecological transition, this energy transformation, and therefore, a green reindustrialisation of our country."
The president recalled the fire recorded in Huelva during the summer, the largest in recent history, and framed the project as part of the solution to the climate emergency. The construction of the Andalusian Green Hydrogen Valley begins now, and its first phase is expected to be operational in the coming years, according to the company.
